First Aid & Healthcare Course
On 2 April, Good Friday, Island Taekwon-Do Centre invited ‘1st Aid & Healthcare’ to conduct the Standard First Aid + Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation + Automated External Defibrillation. The course was held over a period of two days and started from 8.30am till late afternoon. Thanks to ITC, the course was conducted at dojang and much hassle was dismissed. In total, there were seven participants including myself.
When we arrived in the morning, we helped set-up while waiting for the trainer to prepare his slides. Our trainer, Selvaraj, started off by introducing himself and sharing his overall experience as a first aider for his past 43 years.
Next, he shared information and videos on the different situations and allowed us to analyse them. We were also taught about venomous animals and how to treat its poison. Along the way, the trainer shared many other funny experiences which made us all laugh.
At 12pm, we took our lunch break and reconvened an hour later. After lunch, the trainer went through the basic things in a first aid box and how to use it. Later on, we moved on to bandaging of injuries. The injuries included forehead injury, chin injury, neck injury, back of head injury, shoulder and arm injury and ankle injury. We were taught to use triangular bandage and gauze to treat these injuries.
The trainer first demonstrated how to bandage the injury on the model and we broke up into small group to practice. While bandaging my partner, Raj walked around to check and correct our mistakes. Through this bandaging session, I learnt a lot of techniques that I will definitely put to good use.
On the second day, we began with CPR and AED, two other trainers were present to assist. After trying CPR on the dummy for a few times, we were ready for the test. There was a monitor detecting how many compressions the person did, which was very advanced. During the test, everyone cheered for each other and encouraged one another. The test was quick and efficient. We also tried out the AED machine and learnt how to use it properly.
After lunch, the trainer went through some theories and the rationales behind situations like heat stroke and different types of burns etc. At the end of the day, we did our theory test and learnt how to bandage with shoes on.
Overall, the course was very informative and exploratory, much knowledge was gained and I think that I will be able to help someone in the future with the skills I’ve obtained. If there was another session of the course, I would definitely recommend other members to join. Till next time!
Taekwon,
