I am certain that everyone in attendance at the 23rd Island Taekwon-Do Centre and 8th Sun Hapkido Academy Singapore Anniversary Dinner will agree that it certainly was a night to remember.
The dinner was held on the 21st of March at Hooha! Café with the nostalgic theme of Back to School, a theme strictly adhered to by many guests judging by the imaginative scope of costumes on display!
Our charismatic MC for the evening, Shaun Sir, began the dinner with a lively round of icebreakers involving playing cards and a ‘full set’, which was hugely successful given the ensuing pandemonium. It was a fun and exciting way to start the evening that helped the guests to meet new people and make new friends.
Following the conclusion of the games was the student’s oath and Master Sng’s eloquent welcoming speech which was translated into Japanese (using his phone!) for the attending guests from Japan (ITF-Matsumoto) All guests listened attentively to the speech, a testament to the respect all students hold for Master Sng, which outlined the trials and triumphs of the past year at the Island Taekwon-Do centre as it continues on into its 24th year.
Of course, no dinner would be complete without an excellent spread of food. Guests helped themselves to the delicious offerings on display at the buffet table, which included many favourites such as laksa, grilled meats and onion rings. What made the meal even better was listening to the buzz of friendly chatter in the café as friends, new and old, exchanged pleasantries and jokes. After all, the best things in life are good friends, good food and good laughs.
Throughout the course of the dinner we were serenaded by musical performances as our members showcased their talents outside of the dojang. There certainly was a lot of talent on display that night as both senior and junior members took to the stage to sing, strum and play their hearts out.
As the guests began to finish up dessert we moved on to another time worn tradition of the annual dinner – the lucky draw! The tension in the air was palpable as the number cries of “Aiyo!” and “So close!” began to increase and the number of prizes on display began to slowly and surely decrease.
Another favourite event at the Anniversary Dinner are the Best Dressed prizes with two categories for children and adults, but to be fair it was difficult in some cases to tell the difference between the adult and child contestants given the theme of the evening. Although there were many fun and imaginative costumes on display, only a lucky few managed to snag the illustrious titles of “Best dressed”. Scarlett, in her cute school girl uniform won the Best Dressed Girl and David, channelling his inner Harry Potter won the Best Dressed Boy for the 2nd year running! As for the adults, the Best Dressed Female went to Carnation Chai with her very trendy Nanyang Girls High uniform and the Best Dressed Male went to Mr Stephen Slater with his very cool science teacher lab coat and goggles.
After a quick quiz about the history of the ITC the cake cutting ceremony began presided over by Master Sng, his wife Aunty Karen and the members of the organizing committee. For the first time at the anniversary dinner, we had a sparkler candle and it was simply spectacular to see it lit up. The cake was distributed among the guests who I am sure will agree that it tasted just as good as it looked!
All too soon the dinner was over with the Chairperson, Mr Stephen Slater’s stirring closing speech thanking the organizing committee for their dedication and excellent job of organizing the dinner.
This year’s anniversary dinner was an extremely memorable and enjoyable event for all those involved thanks to the combined efforts of the organizing committee.
Special thanks to our guests from Japan (ITF Matsumoto) headed by Mr Ken-ichi Nonaka as well as Master Sng whose wisdom and clear sighted leadership have guided ITC through many years in the past and will certainly continue far into the future. I am certain that we will continue to enjoy many more evenings like this in the future in the company of good food and good friends!
See you next year!
