Island Taekwon-Do Centre sent a team of 12 participants to Kluang, Johor to take part in the Malaysia Taekwon-Do Open Championship 2012. The competition was held for 2 days on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2012. Participants from many countries, including Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia and needless to say the home country Malaysia, were invited to attend the competition. About close to 300 participants took part in this event. The Championship was held in the same location as the International Instructor Course held on the 31st of May and 1st of June at Chong Hwa High School.
A welcome dinner was held on the 1st of June at Prime City Hotel before the start of the competition the very next day.
On the 2nd of June, the opening ceremony held in the school included a performance from a traditional Malaysian Martial Art as well as patterns display from the Uzbekistan team before a speech given by the guest of honour, Honourable Chairman of Youth and Sports , Johor State Committee, HJ Md Jais as well as Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa. From there, the event kicked off.
Individual Patterns and Team Patterns were on the agenda for the 1st day of competition with the colour belts events being held before lunch followed by the Black Belt categories after lunch. The categories for the Patterns were as follows, Under 12 category, Under 17 Category and lastly open categories for both male and female participants. The day closed off with the Team Pattern event.
Shaun Sir was in the 3rd Degree Male Open Category Competition, Jeremy Sir was in the 2nd Degree Male Open Category Competition, Yee Jiat Sir was in the Male 2nd Degree Under 17 Category Competition, Weiling Mdm. was in the Female 1st Degree Open Category Competition, I myself was in the 1st Degree Male Open Category Competition, Pravin Sir, Justin Sir, Hubert, Gavin, Bryce and Russell were placed in the 1st Degree Male Under 17 Category Competition and Rachel Mdm. was in the 1st Degree Female Under 17 Category Competition.
2nd Day of Competition had Sparring and Team Sparring on the menu. Similar to the day before, colour belt sparring was held first followed by black belt sparring and finally Team Sparring events. Shaun Sir was in action that day, in his Black Belt Open Category Competition.
From the 2 days of competition, our team which consists of many first time competitors emerged victorious with a total of 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. For many of us, it was a really and unforgettable experience competing in the ring not to win the opponent but to better our skills and abilities.

As well as to Master Daniel Sng for all his guidance and tough training to prepare us for this championship as the team will fight on with indomitable spirit to bring ITC to greater heights.
