On 17th August 2010, Tuesday, Mr John van Dam (Netherland National Coach 2010 and Team Sparring Gold Medalist in ITF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2004 – SOUTH KOREA) visited Island Taekwon-Do Centre to share some sparring techniques and skills. He conducted training sessions for the normal class from 7.00pm to 8.30pm and led in sparring training for the black belt training from 8.30pm to 10.30pm.
The training for the normal class started with some warming up followed by fundamental techniques, patterns and sparring techniques. Sir John van Dam was very passionate and full of spirit when conducting the training, which kept our spirit high throughout the training. He gave clear explanations of the rationale behind the details of movements in patterns and sparring techniques, which helped gained more insights about techniques of Taekwon-do.
Sir John van Dam led the latter half of the black belt training for sparring techniques training. A lot of variations in training methods for sparring were conducted to develop our techniques holistically. It was satisfyingly tiring and I have learned much more about sparring training under him. The session ended with a few matches light sparring with different partners that was very thrilling and everyone seemed to enjoy it the most.
Training under Sir John van Dam was a wonderful experience and I have learned a lot about sparring from him. I would certainly be glad to attend his training again when there is an opportunity sometime in the future.
