Island Taekwon-Do Centre 18th Anniversary Dinner

Date: 13 March 2010, Venue: Amara Hotel

Once a year the members of Island Taekwondo Centre in Singapore hang up their dobok, dust off their best outfits and attend the anniversary dinner. The 18th Annual ITC Anniversary dinner, was held on 13 March, 2010 at the Amara Hotel in Singapore. This year’s theme was Bows and Ribbons. The gentlemen gamely turned out in bowties, while the ladies creatively wore hair bands, belts and others accessories in the ribbon/bow theme.

Derrick Yong, chair of the anniversary dinner organizing committee welcomed Master Daniel Sng. Master Sng opened the evening with a few inspiring words and timely reminders about Taekwondo’s emphasis on physical and character development, particularly the need to be persistent in your dream, as he was in developing the centre over the years.

Members, their families and guests dined on a buffet of local and international dishes. Friends and members including Sijian and Mr. Steven Slater with his son Joshua and their friend Sam provided entertainment, as well as Jerald and his band Amuse Bouche.

Fun and games included Shameer doing a turn as Bob Barker in ITC’s own Price is Right, with a wine and chocolate full hamper being won by the retail wizards of table seven. The first ever Mr and Miss ITC pageant saw five couples strut the stuff on the catwalk, answer skill testing questions, and perform the moonwalk, under the watchful eyes of the judges, Jonathan Sun, Ivy Tham and Mrs. Klaus. The contest was won by Shaun Chua and Maria Sng. Shaun arrived in disguise as a trainee army officer, complete with newly shaved hair, making him almost unrecognisable to anyone but his closest friends. Chuan Kai, who seemed at home with the kids, ably led the Kids edition of Don’t Forget the Lyrics. He seemed to recall all the words for the kids classics like London bridge is Falling Down and Old MacDonald!

A surprise guest, arranged by Master Sng then took the stage. Michael Jackson, returned from the beyond to wow the crowd with his slick dance moves once again. Having once seen Jackson, from a bird’s eye view in the cheap seats at the National Stadium in ’95, Mr. Tan Suan Hoe, was heard to remark, “Michael’s much bigger up close!”

The cutting of the anniversary cake was followed by the presentation of instructor and assistant instructor certificates to 5 members, as well as certificates of appreciation to the organizing committee, sponsors and performers.

A nail biting lucky draw followed. Alas, as with all good things we then had to bid each other adieu, until next year.
