On 14-15 Nov 2009, ITC organized a Standard First Aid course conducted by Mr Mohamed Hussain Ismail with the help of his two assistants. We had a group of 14 people who participated in this course. In the duration of two days, we covered the following topics:
- The Principles and Practices of First Aid
- Disorders of the Respiratory System
- Disorders of the Circulatory System
- Bleeding and Wounds
- Disorders of Consciousness
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Burns and Scalds
- Fractures and Soft Tissues Injuries
- Effects of Heat and Cold
- Bites and Stings
- Handling of Casualty
The course had been very interesting, lively, humorous and serious, all at the same time! “Interesting” was because the trainer, Mohamed Hussain Ismail has shared his rich experience with the participants on helping or rescuing peoples. Personally, he was involved in a few major accidents that happened throughout the Singaporean history. “Lively” was because the participants and the trainer are constantly engaged in question-and-answer session. The trainer also posed questions back to the participants to think, in order to further clarify his explanation. “Humorous” was due to the first-time that participants put on the bandages on their ‘casualties’ and performing the CPR. During the bandaging, we saw a lot of funny ‘wrapping’ and un-orthodox techniques. During CPR practice, some of us seemed like making the situation worse instead of helping. Not because we intentional want to, but we were applying the wrong techniques. The “serious” part was because a person could be injured, wounded or even life at stake at anytime, anywhere. With this course, we have learned techniques and procedures to attend to the situation properly.
Overall, this has been a helpful and beneficial course to attend. I believe other participants share the same feelings as me. I would like to thank ITC for allowing the use of the premises to conduct the 2-day course and to thank Sir Jeremy Tan for organizing it.
One final note to let you all readers know. Through this course I have found out that I have been applying the handi-plast/band-aid wrongly all these while!
