On the 19th October, 2008, 19 members of Island Taekwon-Do Centre were gathered at the Ballroom of the Zon Regency Hotel for the Johor Bahru Master Class Seminar. After changing into our Doboks, Shaun led us on a warm-up session. The Seminar participants, consisting of Taekwon-Doists from Malaysia and Singapore, were then called to fall in, and we welcomed the instructors with resounding applause.
A photo-taking session followed the speeches.
Without further ado, Master Trevor Nicholls launched straight into the basics of an attack and of how power is generated. The morning was dedicated to concentrating on the various hand-based offensive and defensive techniques, correcting mistakes the students made, and reinforcing the various ways to generate and deliver the power onto a given target. We also practiced basic patterns in an effort to apply these improvements into our patterns. Master Nicholls encouraged seniors to focus on the details of techniques when teaching, to improve the standards of Taekwon-Do.
The Seminar resumed in the afternoon with kicking techniques. Everyone put their best efforts in delivering and improving their attacks. Sweat could be seen flying, muscles surely aching. However, in the spirit of one of the Tenets of Taekwon-Do, we persevered on, intent on nothing more than producing as much power in the offensive or defensive technique we were executing and making sure they were done in the optimum manner. This was in line with Master Nicholl’s lesson on a realistic application of technique, rather than compromising power in exchange for beauty and balance.
Master Trevor Nicholls summarized the day’s lessons before concluding the Seminar. We then receive our Seminar Certificates during the presentation ceremony. An autograph and photograph session then followed, which saw many people queuing up to meet the Masters in person.
Dinner with the hosts and Master Trevor Nicholls was a fine experience, consisting of a multi-course meal at the Lotus Garden Chinese Restaurant. Both Masters’ speeches left as impact on all of us. During the dinner, we got to socialize, take photos, and generally enjoy the evening.
Unfortunately, it was over all too soon, and before we knew it, it was time to leave for Singapore. After thanking the hosts and bidding our farewells, we boarded our coach and headed back. Fortunately, the Causeway was not as congested as we had feared, and we swiftly made our way back.
By the end of this Seminar, we had learnt new ways of executing techniques and got to understand opinions from other points of views. On behalf of all participants, I would like to thank Master Trevor Nicholls for his excellent learning opportunity, as well as the hosts, without whom this would not have been possible. We would also like to thank our Chief Instructor, Master Daniel Sng, for his guidance and continued dedication to furthering Taekwon-Do.
