For the third consecutive year, Island Taekwon-Do held its annual championship at Henry Park Primary School on Saturday, May 24th, 2008. In total, there were 84 participants which comprised of both adults and children.

We were privileged to have the principal of Henry Park Primary School, Mr Ng Teng Joo, as our guest of honor. In his opening speech, Mr Ng recognized the holistic nature of Taekwon-Do. Besides exercising both the body and mind, discipline and moral values are imparted and families are encouraged to train together.

The day kicked off with a demonstration of power breaking by Glen Liu and Jeff Shi. This drew many gasps from the amazed audience. After this event, the day’s actual competition started proper.

Besides the Individual Pattern, Team Pattern and Sparring competitions, this year saw the addition of two other events, the power breaking competition and two special techniques competition which comprised of the jumping front rising kick and the flying side kick. These last two events drew much suspense as new heights and distances were achieved.

Throughout the day, the spirit of friendly competition was evident with pats on the back and hearty congratulations heard.  Everyone gave their respective events their personal best and enjoyed the experience of being in a professionally managed tournament.

The day ended in the late afternoon when medals were awarded to the worthy participants and efforts by the organizers and supporters were recognized with Certificates of Appreciation. Kudos to Sir Shaun and the blackbelts who expertly managed and ran the entire event.
