Iran Taekwon-Do Union Visits Island Taekwon-Do Centre

On 17th & 18th April 2007, we had a kind visit from Iran Taekwon-do Union. In total, there were 8 members of the union, together with a translator. Mr. Hamid Mohtashami, President of the Iran Taekwon-do Union , was the team captain. The aim of their visit was to learn ITF-style patterns and training in lieu of their conversion to the roots of Taekwon-do.

Island Taekwon-do Centre had the privilege of holding a demonstration for Iran Taekwon-do Union as a welcoming ceremony for our guests on 17 th April. The 1 st day was reserved for a gathering-cum-get-together session for Iran Taekwon-do Union and Island Taekwon-do Centre.

Iran Taekwon-do Union organized a short training session, based on the kicking techniques for our ITC members. Our members had gained new knowledge in their quest of learning Taekwon-do. With due respect, Mr. Motashami and his team had demonstrated various kicking techniques of differing abilities which held our members in awe.

With a short training stint, both Iran Taekwon-do Union and Island Taekwon-do Centre has made it a valuable lesson. At Island Taekwon-do Centre, we hope to hold more training visits in the future for our kind friends from Iran and hereby wish them all the best in their conversion to the original Taekwon-do, International Taekwon-do Federation.

Master Peter Wong Visits Island Taekwon-Do Centre

On 10th of April 2007, Master Peter Wong, ITF 7th Dan Chief Instructor, gave us again the honor of visiting Island Taekwon-Do Centre and conducting a training session here.

His international reputation and memories from previous visits raised significant interest among the members. As such we saw about 40 black belts and color belts of all genders and age assembling in the early evening to welcome Master Peter Wong in our Dojang.

After a good warm up and some stretching, Master Peter Wong provided thorough insight into the  basics of ITF Taekwon-Do. He emphasized on the importance of the laws of physics that late founder Grandmaster General Choi Hong Hi had incorporated into our martial art when creating Taekwon-Do, especially the theory of power and the sine wave principle.

A series of combination kicks, blocks and punches sharpened the participants understanding of the basics through practical means. This was followed by practice on the traditional Taekwon-Do patterns.

The master also provided some new challenges by introducing variations to the fundamental exercises, like the “four directional kicks”.

Master Peter Wong is not only an excellent practitioner and instructor of Taekwon-Do, but also focuses on the development of moral and the character building aspects of our art. As such he reiterated the tenets of Taekwon-Do (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit) and that repetition in class is by no means good enough. What is required from all of us is to believe in the tenets and to live and teach them in our daily life.

The visit ended with a photo taking session, which gave also opportunity for individual discussions and questions to the master. Having already twice been able to attend classes by Master Peter Wong, broadened and deepened my understanding of Taekwond-Do and I am hoping for many more such opportunities.
